MIG Welding Wire

MIG welding wire is the solid, continuously fed filler wire used in gas metal arc (GMAW / MIG) welding. The most common type is ER70S-6, a copper-coated carbon steel wire that runs clean on mild and low-alloy steel with C25 or 100% CO2 shielding gas. Which spool size should I buy?

  • 2 lb spools fit the 4 inch hub on small 110V MIG machines and portable welders. Good for occasional repairs and hobby use.
  • 11 lb spools fit the standard 8 inch hub on most 220V shop welders. Best value, and the size most pros reorder.
  • 44 lb coils and pallets are built for high-volume production shops that weld daily.

Match wire diameter to metal thickness: .023" and .024" for sheet metal and auto body, .030" for general-purpose work on 1/8" and up, and .035" for heavier fabrication.
